Abstract

The genus Sorghum Moench is subdivided into sections Chaetosorghums,
Heterosorghum, Parasorghum, Stiposorghum and Sorghum (de Wet, 1978).
Phylogenetic affinities among these sections are poorly understood. However,
it is well established that cultivated sorghums and their closest wild relatives
belong to section Sorghum (de Wet and Huckabay, 1967). S. stapfii, one of the
Sorghum species although reported as early as 1934 by Gamble (1934), did
not find place in anyone of the above mentioned literature. Bor (1960) included
S. stapfii under section Parasorghum and mentioned that little is known about
this attractive species distributed in Tamil Nadu region of South India.
