Plant Introductions in Nepal

Abstract

Nepal is primarily an agricultural country. The sector contributes nearly 38 per cent to GOP and employs more than 65 per cent. Over 500 crops species are edible and nearly 200 species are under cultivation. Agrobiodiversity plays a vital role in the food security. The valuable genetic resources have been nurtured by farming communities over millennia. Introduction and exchange of germplasm have been carried out since the ancient time. The systematically organized approach of introduction and exchange of germplasm started with the advancement of science, for the betterment of humankind. Nepal has significantly contributed towards exchange of germplasm as visualized by the series of exploration mission carried out by different institution! countries. Similarly the nation has benefited from the plant introduction.
