Estimation of Combining Ability Effects of Parental Lines in Upland Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)

Abstract

High yielding parents may not necessarily transmit
their superiority to their progenies in crosses. Therefore,
in a systematic breeding programme it is essential to
identify the elite parents for hybridization and superior
crosses to expand the variability reservoir for selection
of superior genotypes. The line x tester mating design
is very useful and simple procedure for preliminary
evaluation of genetic studies through. hybridization
programme. Accordingly, the present investigation has
been undertaken to determine combining ability for seed
cotton yield and its component traits in G. hirsutum
cotton.
